Packing Lighter in Your RV

Camping at Kiptopeke State Park

There’s an old saying, “you’ve packed everything but the kitchen sink,” that applies to many folks when planning a travel excursion. Whether for a weekend or week-long adventure, there’s a strong tendency to pack more than needed, “just in case.”

If you’re one of these “must have this and that” packers, you might want to consider toning it down and packing lighter. Not only does this give you more space but also less things to rummage through. At Grdner's RV Center, we have plenty of accessories to help you plan a “light as air” trip and still have everything you need from camp stove toasters to griddles.

When getting ready for your next trip, think about using these suggestions to lighten the load.

Go through your RV and take a look at what you already have packed. If you didn’t unpack it or use it on your last outing, chances are, you won’t need it this time around, either.

Remove unnecessary items, whether it’s extra seasonal clothes, appliances, movies you’ve already watched, books you’ve already read, and any other stuff you don’t need.

If you plan to prepare all of your meals inside, wait until you get to a set destination to buy food items. No need to haul can goods or other heavy items. Bring along snacks and beverages but leave the rest till you set up camp.

You can always opt to cook outdoors on a camp stove or griddle. Pick up items for daily meals, cook, and use paper plates, cups and utensils. Toss these in the recycle bin so you don’t have to worry about bringing along dinnerware, cups and glasses.

If you’re hauling a fifth wheel, travel trailer, or folding camper, you can always pack extra “necessary” items, but keep it simple.

Don’t bring along things you think you’ll need. If you’re not sure, you probably won’t need it.
Pack clothing according to where you’re going, not where you’re coming from. If you’re headed to the beach, pack light and simple. There’s no need for extra gloves and flannel shirts.
